Non-surgical/Conservative Treatment

Non-surgical treatment or conservative treatment is one of the 4 areas of foot and ankle medicine and surgery that we offer at AFAS. Not all patients require surgery, and some patients may not be optimal candidates for surgery. We have multiple options for almost all conditions when it comes to non-surgical treatments. Non-surgical treatment DOES NOT mean don't do anything, it means no invasive procedure or surgical treatment may be required but still needs evaluation and treatment.

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. Achilles tendonitis is inflammation build up due to overuse/injury of the Achilles tendon. Sometimes this can lead to injury of the achilles tendon leading to pain that does not go away without treatment. When indicated, we offer many non surgical treatments for achilles tendon problems. Also see regenerative medicine and treatments.

Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain happens when the ankle twists in a way that stretches or tears the ligaments that support it. This causes pain, swelling, and sometimes bruising. Sprains most times can be treated with non surgical treatment, but thorough evaluation is needed to determine if non surgical treatment is sufficient. Also see regenerative treatments for ankle sprains (advance treatments available which involves no bandages, restrictions, incisions or down time)

Big Toe Arthitis

Hallux limitus is a progressive condition affecting the big toe joint (first metatarsophalangeal joint), leading to stiffness, pain, and reduced range of motion. It is often a precursor to hallux rigidus, where the joint becomes completely immobile. When indicated, there are non-surgical treatments available to help treat the symptoms of this condition. Also see Regenerative treatments.

Bunions

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, where it meets the foot. It occurs when the big toe leans toward the second toe, causing the joint to become misaligned. Bunions can be painful, can lead to swelling, and make it difficult to wear certain shoes. There are many non-surgical treatments available to help treat the symptoms of bunion pain.

Hammer Toe

Hammertoe is a deformity in which one or more of the small toes bend abnormally at one, or more than one, of the toe joints, causing the toe to curl downward instead of pointing forward. This condition can be flexible (able to be straightened) or rigid (fixed in place). We offer non-surgical treatments for Hammertoes; when indicated.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain that occurs when the plantar fascia (a thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot) becomes inflamed. We offer many non-surgical and very successful treatments such as shockwave therapy, Laser therapy (no pain what so ever), Placental/amniotic tissue type injections (advance NON steroid injection), to help with heel pain caused by Plantar Fasciitis. Also see regenerative treatments.

Tailors Bunion

A tailor's bunion, also known as a bunionette, is a bony bump that forms on the outside of the forefoot. It is similar to a big toe bunion but occurs below the pinky toe. We offer non-surgical treatments for Tailor's bunion; when indicated.

Toe Fracture

A toe fracture is a break or crack in one of the bones of the toes, which can occur due to trauma, such as stubbing the toe, dropping something on the foot, or participating in high-impact activities. We offer non-surgical treatments available to help treat the symptoms of a toe fracture only when sufficient.

Ankle Fractures

An ankle fracture refers to a break or crack in one or more of the bones that make up the ankle joint, which includes the tibia, fibula, and talus. This type of injury often occurs due to trauma such as a fall, sports injury, or twisting motion. Some fractures do not require surgery and can be managed non-surgically. But thorough evaluation is required to determine if non surgical treatment is sufficient.

Arthitis

Arthritis in the foot and ankle can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and make walking difficult. Treatment depends on the type of arthritis, how severe it is, and how much it affects daily life. We offer are non-surgical treatments available to help treat the symptoms of this condition. Also see regenerative treatments for arthritis.

Foot Fracture

A foot fracture refers to a break or crack in one of the bones of the foot, which can result from trauma such as an accident, fall, sports injury, or excessive stress on the foot. When indicated, there are non-surgical treatments available to help treat this condition. Also see regenerative treatments.

Foreign Body

A foreign body is anything that gets stuck in the foot that doesn’t belong there—like a splinter, piece of glass, or small object. It can cause pain, swelling, or infection. After thorough examination, a decision needs to made about surgical vs non surgical treatments.

Hallux Varus

Hallux varus is a condition in which the big toe deviates medially; away from the other toes. It can be congenital, acquired, or develop as a complication of prior surgery. The condition may cause discomfort, difficulty in walking, and cosmetic concerns. We offer non-surgical treatments available to help treat the symptoms of this condition.

Soft Tissue Masses

A soft tissue mass is a lump or bump under the skin made of tissue like fat, fluid, or cysts. Most are harmless, but some can cause pain, pressure, or irritation. Thorough evaluation is required to help determine if non-surgical treatment is sufficient.

Tendonitis

Tendinitis is irritation or inflammation of a tendon—the thick band that connects muscle to bone. It often causes pain, swelling, and stiffness around the foot or ankle.  We offer advanced non surgical treatments that may include regenerative options such as shockwave therapy, MLS laser therapy, or amniotic/placental injections to promote healing. Supportive care like custom orthotics can also reduce strain on the tendon and help prevent the problem from coming back. We make custom orthotics that only fits you as an individual.

An ingrown toenail happens when the entire edge (border) of your nail grows into the surrounding skin. This can cause pain, redness, swelling, and infection. Untreated ingrown toenail can lead to other problems such as nail deformity, discoloration, pyogenic granuloma (mass on side of the toenail). At AFAS, we perform thorough exam to evaluate ingrown toenail(s), treat infection if need be, and perform proper ingrown toenail correction(s). We discuss in great detail about after care and how to prevent it from coming back. You walk out pain free with supplies you will need for after care (same day appointment)
